Re: Your Latest Fav Piece-a-Gear?

Christopher, No reason for snare envy, they're just instruments, alone they do nothing! But there ARE a bunch there whose sound really inspires me (and the musicians around me.) I think that different instruments (sounds) can inspire you to use different parts of your vocabulary (both in ideas and f...

Re: Your Latest Fav Piece-a-Gear?

Those look sweet Julian. Are they some of the "new" Yamaha's? Details? Opinions? What are those Headhunter things? Brushes? Rods? Sticks? Details? I recently got a few new snares. An 8x15 1957 WFL solid Mahogany. I heard Levon use one of these at a session once, and have had "that sou...

Re: Keith Moon and black dots

Moon always sort of reminds me of a "rock version" of an avant-garde jazz drummer. Sort of a rock version of Andrew Cyrille, Milford Graves, Paul Motian, or Rashied Ali. That's a very good analogy Mark. Moon was a big reason I started playing drums, and probably one of my main early influ...

Re: Jazz Drummer - Phil Seamen matched grip

Phil released a "unique" LP of him talking about drums, music, etc... called "The Phil Seaman Story." It's sort of like an English version of Papa Jo Jones' "The Drums," there is playing and talking. When you listen to it it sounds like Ginger did learn ALOT (!!!) (mayb...

Re: NAMM 2014

Yup, I know of quite a few guys who apply a single strip of electrical tape around the end of a stick to add some weight to alter the balance for themselves. Damn, how much can a one inch (or less) long strip of electrical tape weigh? But it DOES make a difference. And, "Best sticks in the worl...

Re: NAMM 2014

Yes it's AMAZING how much difference a few well placed grams on a stick matters. I used VF 5A's for a long time, and always turned the LH stick around because I couldn't find a comfortable trad grip balance point. Steve gave me a few pairs of his sig sticks to try after I told him about that, saying...

Re: Graham Lear

Yeah Paul!!!! Based on my new gig, I've been listening to Graham Lear A LOT!!! He sounds wonderful on "Moonflower," he approached that music so differently than Mike Shrieve, not better not worse, just different. And although he was somewhat busier, he still managed to leave space for the ...

Re: Keith Moon and black dots

I can't necessarily say that Moon was a big drumming influence, because I couldn't wrap my mind around what the hell he was doing. But that fact alone was sort of a "musical (maybe conceptual) influence." But I STILL don't understand how a constant stream of seemingly "reckless" ...

Re: Keith Moon and black dots

Moon has always mystified, intrigued, and even pissed me off. I grew up LOVING "Who Are You," but I never got a chance to actually see Moon play (pre youtube, he died the year I began playing drums, and there wasn't much of Moon on MTV.) But after I got a chance to see him play (on videota...
