Re: What heads are you currently using?

It doesn't have to be a metal gig. I, for instance, have to change heads every once in a while because my deal isn't that good anymore and I really don't feel the need to do so. A snare head would last a good couple of months of regular gigging (we're talking coated Emperors, of course) and for the ...

Re: What heads are you currently using?

I would say there is no comparison to evans coated heads to remo coated heads. In my experience, evans coating doesn't disintegrate, flake, or chip off, period. Remo only lasts a couple of months tops. Both brands' coating will go away if you play consistently and hard enough. It's most noticeable ...

Re: What heads are you currently using?

I had previously tried the EMAD heads but didn't do it for me. Too plastic-sounding and the device was too fragile for my taste. I was endorsing Evans and still used EQ3 or EQ4 heads... As for the Remo quality control issues, I've encountered them in the past but not anymore. They're not actually 10...

Re: What heads are you currently using?

It always depends on the user and how dedicated one is to investigating the use of sound. It's just like people who buy maple drums just to fit them with pinstripes and muffle the hell out of them instead of getting a birch set in the first place. Actually, I'd differentiate between practical and im...

Re: What heads are you currently using?

I use Remo exclusively and don,t really change things around, I like my sound as it is right now: clear Emperors on tom tops, clear Ambassadors on bottom. Coated Emperors on the snare (I just kept denting G1s and Ambs) and Amb snare side. On the bass drum I've been using the Powersonic head since 20...

Re: Vinnie's ride on 'Secrets'

Could it be some kind of A Custom prototype? The first A Custom catalog I have is from 1990, I think.

Re: Drum Mics

Yeah, and you just can't reproduce the sound quality and warmth of a real good pre with plugins. Anything the sound goes through will affect your final result. A good friend of mine who was a producer (sadly passed away a few years ago) always wanted to test how the mixing board affected the sound. ...

Re: Congrats to Gavin!

Way to go! :) I recently re-read the Modern Drummer feature from Jan '09 (I think) and man, it's always a pleasure to read/hear your insight on sound, music language and drumming in general.
Again congrats!

Re: Drum Mics

They're worth the money if you appreciate that kind of sound and have the $. Surely you can also get pretty good results with a B91/B52 combo because the B52 will get most bass frequencies and even sub-bass ones. That's what I usually do with my band, our sound man always brings his B91 and uses wha...
