Re: Long Distance Drum Lessons...

i also think this is something better suited to more intermediate or advanced players--and agree with the technology caveats (net connection, etc). it is confounding to get drumming fundamentals down in the best of circumstances, which to my mind takes place in person. it's very hard to replace that...

Re: New Rush single

rush'll always be relevant to me even though, with a few exceptions, they stopped buttering my muffin after moving pics. i went to the last 2 little tours they did and loved that they pulled out stuff they didn't play in prior tours. (though nothing compares to seeing farewell to kings tour). tons o...

Re: The Audition: experience, advice, stories, etc...

i just failed an audition this week. i knew i would, so it's all good. i did it because i needed to light a fire under my ass and get out there again. i am on an all-time confidence low on many fronts, including my playing, so i wanted to challenge myself and do something to help me focus on things ...

Re: Recent Novak studio vid...

love the g-man. haven't seen him in performance or clinic in a long while, but i was surprised at his approach during one. he kind of took the lowest common denominator path and rocked out. it sounded amazing, but i was expecting him to wax poetic on (and play) the more nuanced stuff. maybe he thoug...

Re: Musical individuality: some questions to ponder....

My playing has gone backwards in the past five years, truly. I just don't have much time to practice. But two things stand out for me--jack dejohnette's video, in which he encourages us to trust our intuitive musical sense, and the admonitions of all my teachers, who always told me to strive to be m...

is it sacrilege to say jimmy page? coz no matter how sloppily he may've played live, those zep riffs and studio sounds are legendary! always loved his playing. other faves: pat metheny--early stuff john abercrombie george benson--prior to the smoothies alan holdsworth--always and forever! carol kaye...

Re: When a gig is done- moving on

i've never had a gig on that level but know of people that have and have gone further and not gone further, and it seems like the natural trajectory for a musician trying to get somewhere with their art. i agree with the others that it's inspiring just hearing about your journey and dedication, so a...

Re: OT: I'm curious about the Portland/Seattle area

willy, you need a car to get around seattle. everything is quite spread out and public transport, while ok, doesn't run as late nor as frequently. i agree austin has more musical opps. portland, too. as gaddy states, i do not see an easy portland-seattle crossover. personally, i think if you want ne...
