Re: Any HOD folks in AL?

Thanks Clint! I wondered if I'd have to go to Atlanta or Nashville to find a good drum shop... sounds like that's the case. That's okay, though, Atlanta's less than a couple hours from where I'll be at... I'm okay with a drive once or twice a month for a great shop. I'll be back and forth between Bi...

Any HOD folks in AL?

HOD- My wife and I are on our way to Alabama due to a work related (read: forced) move. We'll be there for at least a few years. Looking for any of you that might know some good places to go to get a start getting into the music scene in the Birmingham/Montgomery areas, as well as any good teachers,...

Re: The age old "chops vs groove" debate

Imo, search your soul and ask what music genre you are most passionate about. Consume this library of music. All technique/chops are filtered through the application phase or 'end in mind.' This is great advice... and something that took a while for me to realize. I think the chops vs. groove debat...

Re: Ari Hoenig Digestion Suggestions

If you're an iTunes kind of person; there's a great iTunes Essentials set called 'Jazz: The Young Lions'. Most of the artists are somehow related to the Marsalis stable; but it's a great set to get your ears on a lot of the more expressive [newer school] artists in jazz. Not sure if there's any Ari ...

Re: David "Frankie" Toler- RIP

I have a Toler Bros record from not too far back. All black cover with just a Toler Bros emblem on it. Some fantastic blues drumming on that. Great feel. Sad to hear. Condolences Pat.

Re: What do you do on a bad day? (in order to play a big sh

Sounds like you need some perspective. How about striking up a conversation with someone confined to a wheelchair? How about a trip to the local homeless shelter? How about a trip to downtown Joplin? In the spirit of Memorial Day, take a trip to the closest War memorial and pay your respects to the...

Re: Nashville first-call drummers

Pat- Is Billy Thomas still around Nashville? Always loved his playing with Vince Gill. Also another favorite of mine is Willie Ornelas but I don't know if he was ever a 'Nashville' guy or not. I know he's worked a lot with Chris Hillman and Jerry Douglas, both those guys have strong ties to Nashvill...
