My favorite Weckl solo (PASIC 2007)
My favorite Weckl solo (PASIC 2007)
Part 1
Part 2.
Something about this particular solo speaks to me...Dave's touch, dynamics, and phrasing are out of this world here. He has a few moments where he cuts loose with chops, but they are used sparingly and effectively, and he builds and releases tension throughout the solo.

Dave is just insane, could listen to him solo like that all day long, music for my ears.

I like how he composes his solos from a basic skeletal form. He uses a similar form a lot especially for open solos leading into a tune. I've seen it not only on this vid but with CCEB, Stern, the Nomads and, of course DWB. Here, he starts with the Rute brushes stating his A section moving into sticks and reinforcing the same melodic A material. In this vid rather than moving into a bass drum ostinato he slips into an oh so cool N'awlins/swing feel that later morphs into Latin...after a short little dynamic interlude he pulls out the stops and kicks into high gear. It ends with the usual reiteration of A material employing dead sticking and side sticking on cymbals.
If you listen to different live versions of tunes like Stern's "Tumble Home," "KT" or "Chromazome" you'll catch similar devices in the way he constructs the solo that remain constant for that tune. The solos are completely different night to night but there's a "character" to the stuff he plays that is unique to the tune. Take a listen to the New Morning Paris concert then check out the same tunes elsewhere on Youtube or find one of the many bootleg concerts out there (I posted a link to one of a fabulous live show from Stockholm recorded a short time before they recorded the Paris dvd...on the old forum). Do an A-B comparison and you'll see what I mean. I love this about Dave...he's very musical with it.
