... By none other than Carmine Appice.
We're opening for his band with Paul Shortino and Javier Vargas for a few dates. He was very kind after our show, complimenting my drummig and singIng. Then he procceeded to remind us all what real rock drumming is about. He's playing with such intensity, going for it on every single bar, putting showmanship on it with such class... I just feel I've been playing too safe for too long.
I've never been a big fan, but today he just played what you could label as a typical rock drum solo but he made it untypical and got the whole crowd going by himself like he could get away with anything. You don't learn that stuff on books (let alone youtube).
Yeah, just needed to share that. I've been inspired in an unexpected way.
PS: the guy from Vince Neil's band can take a damn number at showmanship.

Yeah have always liked Carmine's playing, great drumming on Blue Murder album from the 80s/90s!

Don't forget that he sort of invented that type of solo!

I'm sure you killed it Matus. Carmine and his brother are certainly badass. He'll tell ya he invented the Bonham triplets (and that they are misnamed) and the double bass rock shuffle. His 1970 recording of Parchment Farm with Cactus is straight balls . . . before Hot For Teacher and before Cobham's Quadrant 4:

Ran into Carmine a few times locally when I lived in LA...once in the sauna at the gym the other at a UPS store.
Very cool guy. Seemed to carry a grudge against Modern Drummer for slighting his impact...then I saw a lot of
ads with him over the next year. Hope they made peace.
Realistic Rock...first drum book in 7th grade.
His work on Rod Stewart's Foot Loose & Fancy Free was dynamic. Very heavy sound ala Bonham or ala Carmine,
which ever came first.
Always dug these before Rod changed gears with Tony Brock (also a favorite):
