Thanks everyone! Just wanted to hear some thoughts. For me, a shorter stick height is better(more control) and I prefer playing that way, but what I was stuggling with is how to get there. And I think I've figured it out. If you're hitting the drum squarely and using rebound, relaxing the grip when doing so will get you more controlled stick heights and a more musical sound. I think Jojo does a good job of explaining stick heights on his dvd but he also leaves it open saying, "no matter what stick heights you use".
When I listen to some of VC's clinics when he's chops out, it really sounds like he's controlling the heights but it doesn't sound unnatural. So he confuses me. lol
