Mr. Deep Fried,

It's a great sounding drum. BUT, I will say this. When I bought it, Bill (from Classic Vintage Drums in NJ) and I did a little experiment. I have a Heuer Hitmaker (generic Black Nickel Shell, same shell as World Max, Pork Pie, etc.) that has Die Casts, a Dunnett strainer, is the same size, also has 10 Lugs, and Puresound Wires.

We tuned them both up (side by side) with the same (broken in) heads and wire configuration; And VERY surprisingly, they are VERY close. The 1928 was smokier, and had a little more mids (which might equate as "ballsier.") The DC's might have cut out some mids on the Hitmaker, and the single flanged hoops provided a slighter "open" sound on the 1928. The 1928 felt a little softer under my hands (probably the hoops as well.) But to both of our ears they were VERY close. I might try this again with the same hoops, and see what happens (I'm a real SD junkie.)

I know this is sacrelige, but he has pretty good ears for vintage gear (more vintage gear has probably gone through his hands than everyone on this website combined,) and my ears are "pretty" refined. But we were both pretty amazed at how close they actually were/are.

Granted, I still bought the 1928, I was on sort of a quest, I had the $$$ in hand (and the wife was pushing me to "finally" get the drum that she had been hearing ((and was sick of hearing)) about for YEARS!) The "mojo" factor is pretty priceless, and the wow factor on gigs (when drummers notice it, or when other musicians notice it) is cool...

But... Is the difference worth the vast difference in price? Probably not. But it will hold it's value in case I ever am stupid enough to sell it (which ain't gonna happen!) It is a GREAT sounding and playing drum though!!!! And when you pull it out at sessions, engineers seem to relax a little bit.

Hope that helps,
MSG
