Transcription nerds thread.

Postby JerryOnDrums » Fri Aug 19, 2011 7:36 pm

I'm sure there are some other transcribing threads, but I didn't see any for a couple pages back and thought, what the h, I'll start another one. ;)

What is everybody currently transcribing? And what have you successfully completed in the past? I figure this can be a good place to discuss not only interesting grooves/solos, but also a place to foster some discussion about particular problems, etc anybody might be having. You never know when somebody else is working out the same stuff, too.

Completed:
Brian Blade's solo on "Jazz Crimes"
The head and first chorus (guitar solo) of Stewart's comping on Metheny's "What Do You Want"
First 6 choruses of comping on "Soul Cowboy" off of Methey's Trio Live album (Stewart)
Danny Carey's solo on "46&2"
Dillinger Esacpe Plan's "43% Burnt" and "Highway Robbery" (Chris Pennie)

Currently, I'm transcribing Bill Stewart's solo trading choruses off of "Soul Cowboy"...and holy mother, it's intense. Honestly, if you told me that you had only circumstantial evidence that Bill Stewart were an alien, it'd be enough to convince me whole-heartedly.

What are you guys working on?

There's this thing called the Internet where you can post stuff like that and link to it for all of us to see and be amazed and sing your praises.

:D

Whaaa? Kind sir, you must go on! I need to know more about this medium of which you speak... :P

And Deep- yes, that would be sweet. Unfortunately my chicken scratch is a bit difficult to decipher, but I'll see if I can't scan it and post it up.

I also started working on Blade's solo off of the live video of Jazz Crimes on youtube, but that quickly got reeeeeaaaaally difficult. That one's on hold for a bit. 8-)

Here's my take on the solo- it's *somewhat* standard notation, but if there's any clarification I can give, I'd be happy to.

Not that it's wrong or anything, but I've always found useful the kind of notation that puts "hand" note flags upwards and "feet" downwards. For some reason it helps my sight reading and understanding of the orchestration.
I lost a whole bunch of transcriptions, mostly Tony / Elvin stuff and a lot of Dream Theater tunes I did in my late teens-early 20s. I never found that notebook again :(

Here's my version... sorry it looks horrible, but I remember knocking this out on the bus ride to studio class...

Thanks for posting this, Paul! I've been on a strong Bill Stewart kick lately.
