Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not if it questions Tony Williams in any way. Tony existed on a different plane of consciousness.

What I got out of what Tony and Elvin said about Moon is expression. I think musicians at that level felt that originality and expression on their instrument was everything. Like his technique or not, Moon had his own thing...it was his playing personality and his alone. I think copy-cats were looked down upon. I wish more people still had that attitude today. I wish it was more encouraged to have your own style, not sound like EVERYONE else. I find myself getting upset when I see youtube drummers playing drumcovers. Or guys that sound exactly like say, Neil Peart or Carter Beaford etc etc...I always think "that has been done already...do your own thing". I myself learned how to play by copying my favorite drummers, but, you have to let go eventually. It's one thing to have to facility to be able to pull off what other great drummers have done, but its another to become a clone. I think expression and having your own voice on your instruments means everything...and I think that the greats looked at other musicians the same way, even if it wasn't what their particular style or genre or how they played themselves. It's easy to copy, it's harder to be original. I don't know, I tend to like drummers that DON'T play like me and drummers that I can't possibly copy.

Apologies for being perhaps a touch facetious, but the word 'travesty' was probably a little much, even if the bandwagon of the day is DW hatred.

I just thought it was a little trite given that less than 24 hours before in the thread about Gregg Bissonette changing drum companies you wrote, "I am so completely over giving a crap about what any drummer plays...including guys I listen to."
