My opinion >>> the studio mix/master robs quite a bit of the pure, raw emotion.
Thanks guys - and good point, amoergosum. Generally sspeaking - and if the performance is there, I think there is something to be said for mixing a song in twenty minutes. Also, I wonder if I nailed it better the third or fourth time I played it. (the studio version was two takes. We did two takes for this live thing and they were indistinguishable so I don't know which was chosen - I signed off on both takes.) AS much as I believe in hearing that moment when the "light bulb" goes off, I wonder if I simply played it better on the second- live version? Many thanks - It's pretty good biting into Bound - that is one of those pockets I can fall out of bed and play

Another note - the live version is not mastered so the dynamics are def bigger on the live version. On all the live versions, the drums are louder too becausse they were in the vocal mic. I think that might be the biggest factor determining preference.
Was it recorded on your own along to basic tracks or live with some other musician? That might have made the whole difference. Feeling the energy of the performance right there, in the atmosphere and in the faces of the other people, is a totally different level. And you always seem like someone who really feeds on that stuff when playing, connecting with the others, so that might be the extra magic you hear. Of course, not mastering the whole thing is an important factor, it makes it sound even more raw.
BTW,I do like drums coming through the vocal mic, just as I like snare buzz with the bass drum sound
