I think there are situations when "bad sounding drums" sound more appropriate than "good sounding drums". I don't think having Yamaha PHX's and the priciest of Zildjians would work with the music of Tom Waits. Same with this guy. I like the trash-aesthetics in his sound and playing. Sort of like The Animal meets Gospel Chops meets Captain Beefheart.
I also think these kind of guys are a part of musical evolution happening in the NOW. Check out some of that stuff on Spotify or elsewhere. I don't like all of that stuff either but I respect the fact that it sounds original, exciting. Most "new" music was almost always met with suspicion. Bebop and rock'n'roll was devil's music, Ornette Coleman was largely considered a weak player by jazz greats of that time etc.
I know that this is fusion-jazz orientated site, but what once represented a fresh and new "style" has mostly regressed to something stale and close-minded(although technically perfect usually, considering the drumming).

This is not my style of music at all, but somehow I like this video, it's natural, organic. I'm into music that doesn't try hard, and some music just is and is awesome. Maybe his drums sound shit but maybe it's supposed be that way. No compression, no million-dollar production. Just music...

And crazy is a good thing. Accepting all of that: Give me the gospel chops guys. Give them to me now. All of them. They are way more subtle.
More musical, too!

He can play fast. But I think this is a matter of taste... Or the lack of such thing. I simply don't understand how any of this is useful outside of the silly "World's Fastest Drummer" competitions. It doesn't move me in any way whatsoever, doesn't inspire me to get "faster"... It mostly just bores me. Sorry, I guess this sort of stuff just flies over my head.

I disagree. Good sounding drums work better than bad sounding drums all of the time. I don't care what kind of music it is. You can dampen more or less, tension them higher or lower, but they have to sound good. This guys drums are just slightly better sounding than plastic buckets.

^^^+1 what DSOP says.
I know at one point he used a single-headed bass drum that was formed out of a fiberglass surfboard.
