If you don't like the sound of the drums on someone's record, blame the engineer and/or producer, and no one else. Also, don't be so sure that a YouTube video will sound the same as the original recording. There can be a lot of tinkering going on with the audio before, during or even after uploading a video.

I've heard Vinnie's drums first hand. They sound great. I've also heard him complain about how final mixes that he's played on ended up. Once he leaves the studio, it's out of his hands. If you've ever done any significant amount of recording, you will appreciate how frustrating that can be. I've done a limited amount over the years, and I've been disappointed in results more than half of the time. This is the reason why people like Dave Weckl and Simon Phillips started getting more involved with the engineering of many things they have worked on. Only a drummer can really know how the drums are supposed to sound.

Of course, his drum sound is not going to be loved by everyone. There are many drummers who I've heard in person that have had terrible sounding drums. They still played great, but I would have done things differently with their heads or tuning. That's what makes drumming and drums so fascinating. You can really be unique, if you want to be. Funny thing is, most people end up sounding the same as everyone else. They use the same drums, the same sizes, the same heads, and even the same sticks.

These are 3 of the best tracks (not available on youtube) from the first vinyl record I ever bought with Vinnie. Tom Scott, 1982, all recorded direct to disc so no pressure!

Some great playing here, I've brightened them all up a bit so the hi-hat is clearer.

If the above doesn't work, I've uploaded them to my dropbox and you can stream and download here if you have dropbox installed. Original versions and brightened up versions. I tried soundcloud but they got instantly detected as copyright infringement and got deleted.

Relatively unknown artists - DJ Williams comes to mind - present this genre infinitely better than the latest Jing Chi effort ...

I remember hearing this a long time ago and the aggressiveness and groove with the creativity blew my mind apart. The whole show he is pushing the edge.
