Vinnie w/Patitucci in the late 80s/early 90s is where I start most drummers new to Vinnie. To me, it was the best example of Vinnie learning how to be Vinnie in the studio. He was so constrained, but every now and then you'd hear the reckless abandon. Just enough to be tasty. Except Scophiles, which I think we all agreed years ago is definitive drum porn.

Avenue D live ... when he goes to the double pedal, I swear he's channeling some old Cobham somewhere deep in the recesses of that magnificent brain. I've not heard much of the bootleg double pedal stuff. I knew it was out there, but that wasn't how I imagined it sounding. It sounds like Tony's hands with Cobham's feet, which is a daunting thing to think about.

Gaddabout - great post. I also love Vinnie on Marienthal's "Crossroads"..he's on several tracks there and gets pretty aggressive.

Honestly I think Spaceships from Sketchbook MIGHT be my ALL TIME Vinnie track however. Over City Nights and Seven Days and all that. Oh..."Going Nowhere" from the first Jing Chi is in my opinion pure fucking genuis. Such a simple riff and to come up with THAT drum part.

Good Gawd.

PS A quick google found Johns myspace of all things which lead to this legit musicplayer with Spaceships.

Yeah, Vince on "Crossroad", he's really no joke and I really think that it's a must have.

"Avenue D" could be my favorite track, or "Crestline", but at end I think that "Secrets" could be the one. :D
So many good tracks, I don't know...

Never seen that one before, renardvert. Thanks. I love Vinnie's raw, straight forward shuffle. For all the unrestrained fireworks I love him for, his meat & potatoes shuffle pocket is simply perfect to me.

but!!!! that DX7 piano patch earns a great big:

nice robben ford clip. been a while since i saw that. to bad the live at my place 1988 boot doesn't have any video. some of my favorite vinnie stuff is on that boot. the tune Getaway just kills me. his pocket is just unreal. the fills, ideas and phrases are out of this world.

This one is funny. The sound is not that good but there's a couple of cool fills.
