I love Vinnie but I have yet to hear a video with his Paistes where they sound good.

Ever since I heard that he might have lost some hearing over the years I can't help but wonder if their slogan should be

"Paise sounds great for those partially or completely deaf!"

^The only time they sounded good, was when I heard them live with Herbie. I could hear them more through the room, and hardly through the house. They sounded like EAK's to me, but the mics don't get that at all.

I almost feel guilty about how uninterested I am in that. ^

Man, you're right.

I saw your comment after I viewed this clip above and felt the same way--
"Almost guilty feeling that it did not interest me"

Permission to be honest Sir !?

Well, not having been too knocked out by recent releases w/ Vinnie
in the last few years (yes, there were some nice standouts)
I made several 'mix' CDs of Vinnie with Brandon Fields first 2 CDs,
Eric Marienthal's first 2 CDs, John Patitucci's first 3 CDs, Suzanne Dean's
CD
, Bill Myers Images CD, Doug Cameron's CD ( only the Vinnie trax)
and of course re-mastered it to bring Vinnie very clearly and crisply (is that a word?)
to the front of the mix, and it reminds me of just how many light
years ahead of his time he was....
I mean, how do you compare that solo from last month with Herbie
to his playing on Bajo Bajo, or his trading with Chick Corea on Eric
Marienthal's CD.....timeless - fresh new ideas soooo tastefully,
flawlessy and awesomely executed.

Even the way Vinnie plays his extended intro on Actual Proof is not fusion
anymore...just a funky straight beat with a backbeat....what happened there?

I guess I really appreciate Vinnie's playing, recordings and esp boots of the 80s.

We could surmise what has possibly gone wrong inside his technique, but it's really not worth it. I still have so much to draw from his work that I really do appreciate, and his impact on me has been like no other.

Well, people change over time. You can't expect someone to play the same as the years go by. It's just not reasonable. It might not be as noticeably aggressive or flashy, but there's still tons of depth to Vinnie's phrasing.

No one plays the same 20 years later. Plus (the elephant in the room) as one gets older perhaps their physical abilities are reduced as well, pending how much care they took/take of themselves.

It's hard to concentrate when the millions you bank don't make the mortgage.
