The Dance of Maya - drum cover video

Postby sturla » Sun Feb 12, 2012 1:31 pm

Hey guys!

Yesterday I went to the my little practice shed and did a run through of the Mahavishnu Orchestra classic "The Dance of Maya" from The Inner Mounting Flame.
Interesting playing this quirky "bluesy" groove in 10/8, I´d say. It wasn´t the easiest thing to keep it all on track and not loose oneself in the groove (as I sure did a couple of times), but there you go.

I love the section right before the end where the melodic comes in super-imposed over the other which to me sounds like two planets are on collision course, or something like that! hehe
What an intense piece of musical masterpiece this is! I absolutely love the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham is such a huge influence to me.

I always counted it three bars of 6/8 and one bar of 2/8. Where does 10/8 come from?

Btw, sounded great.

I like this! Nice work. My two cents: 1 bar of 12/8 1 bar of 4/4 :)

Thanks guys!
Yes, if you feel it "on the beat" it will be like those two time signatures.
I feel the pulse in 10/8. It will then be an 3/2 type feel as opposed to the 8th note subdivisions.

No – I don't have that box set – well, I didn't know there was one!!?
I do have to check those out now I know Billy (they all were) was on fire that night!

I've heard a live Maha show on Wolfgang's Vault where John introduces Dance of Maya as being in 20/8 then laughs...
