Ludwig P86/BB

Perhaps this was discussed on the old board -- so apologies if this is an old question.

I have the P85 on my BB -- and it is ok, but it doesn't always throw smoothly and it does stick up a tad. I am considering the P86 and just wanted to know if anyone has an opinion on that.

Thanks in advance.

Do it. Just remember to put a tiny drop of machine oil on any pivot points.

I would also say to go for it. I put the P86 on my Supra and my Black beauty and never looked back! It's a solid strainer. Way better than the P85 for me.

Absolutely do it! The P86 is far superior. I was kind of shocked that such a shitty throw-off would come standard with the BB.

Yup. People have been complaining about the P85 for at least 20 years. It's a junk throw off. Ludwig probably have 50 billion of them in their factory and will keep the 85 as their standard throw off 'til they are all gone.

Thanks everyone -- I will do it.

I love the drum -- but just haven't liked the P85 -- so I think this is the right move.

most drum manufacturers have had to up their game to compete...
budget kits offer as good a hardware as we had on pre 1972 drum kits from Lud, Rogers etc..
we have a more discriminating & more informed buyer today that has more choices than years ago..It suprises me that Ludwig gets away with such an arcane throw-off on such a great (but expensive) snare drum!

But the P86 should go right on the BB right? That is it should line up, shouldn't it?

Yes. The P85 and P86 have the same mounting dimensions. Looks like the Black Magic uses a different throw-off.
