I've used Joe Franco's book, it's basic double bass, if I use Gavin's substitutions and some of my own ideas I can make it more difficult. I have Virgil's book but haven't really practiced anything in it. Some of the stuff looks crazy. Is Virgil's book the best?
Virgil used to go through Colin Bailey's book with his left foot, just to get it going, when he
got into double bass drum playing. That's a good (and hard) way to start.
Virgil's book is, though, very thorough and will take you places if you dedicate yourself to it.
