Just got my paws on a 60's round badge snare.

14" x 4"

It sounds so sweet. Amazing jazz sound, and with the muffle applied right, it has the nastiest dry funk sound.

I ended up trading my drum teacher back a drum which I bought from him over 10 years ago.

It was a bright magenta WOOD Trick snare drum. 10 lug, with a triangular badge and Ocheltree's name on it.
The drum was incredibly responsive and loud. I hadn't been using it on gigs for a year or two because it was such a beast.

When I brought it up to my teacher that I wasn't digging on it anymore he initally gave me 14" x 6" Trick snare (he endorses Trick) to scope for a trade.
It was good, but not what I was looking for.

In that time, my teacher developed a new affinity for that wood Trick and offered up the round badge. Best trade ever...

I'm smitten by my own snare for the first time in my life.

Congrats, but the truth is the snares were often the weak link in the RB sets. Not saying they never made good ones but they are definitely not worth what some people pay for them. I've owned some RB sets and stuff but I absolutely prefer the stuff made now a days.

Thing is, he showed me a ludwig he has that was amazing... He really wanted that old trick back and since he had a nugget vintage wood drum already, he let me have it.

Yeah, I was reading that. He let me play it on a gig and it sounded great. I was totally over that trick drum I had, so an even trade seemed legit to me.

It's a lot early of a serial number than most of the RB snares you see going on the internet, and they way I have it set up with a Ludwig Weather Master X-thin on the bottom and that Aquarian Modern Vintage on top, it is performing incredibly.

OOH, S#!t

That's some sweeet drum porn right there; wish you'd posted a pic of the throw off side.

You can't get much classier than that; plus, that's my overall favorite vintage wrap.

Glad to hear you're enjoying that vintage sound!

If you want to garner some more congrats, or info, head on over to http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/.

The folks over there are very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Hey, I see the bata in the background; you still playing that stuff?

I still work on Bata. I need to go take another lesson... the group I was in disbanded and not having a weekly rehearsal and gigs on an instrument makes it hard.

I like playing the Oru Seco at work as mood music; I think it fits in here at the waterfront, because it sounds a bit like rigging pinging against masts at a yacht harbor.

I love the way they use batas in this song:
