Good thoughts Kurtis...
Influential drummers poll would weed out a lot.
It seems you cannot compare Ringo to Virgil for instance
or Tony Williams to Porcaro.
Take the "band" name out, and how many would fall away?
It's just so stupid to want to hold onto a top list. There
is some cat who played some New Orleans groove back in
the 40's I thought was amazing. The drummer for Herb Albert
will never get named, Nick Ceroli, but he played great and
I loved his stuff as a kid. Sinatra's drummer, Irv Cottler will
never be on the list, but talk about playing to the song and
making those songs come alive!
Holmes has more chops than both Ringo or Watts together
and then some...there's a 15yo kid at this years NAMM show
that could blow most of the drummers away in the 70's...
If you play on a popular recording, does that make you great?
Play in a popular band? If that's the case, Nick Mason should
be at the top of the list.
I think it makes you accomplished and very fortunate to have
been at the right time and the right place.
My big issue is "lists" leave out so many who are equally deserving of
recognition and give people a way to categorize talent usually
making them feel better about their favorite band drummer and
about them self.
I once met a pretty famous drummer at a local gym in the sauna.
I was stunned at how pissed he was at the then MD drummer poll.
He told me he called the editor, asked him for more page recognition,
told me how he influenced several of the top rated drummers, how
he felt screwed...
I told him I liked him.
