I'm so excited about both my new job and the fact that I now have a home where I can both practice drums, and as money allows, make this into a pretty neat little studio.

When I get some higher quality recording equipment I will start sharing lots of little videos for some hopefully constructive criticism.

Years of health issues and all sorts of crap at work, I'm now on the right track.

Yeah, it's great and I love both living in the forest, still only having about 7 min drive to work down town and if I want to travel for some lessons with bigger names Trondheim is only 2,5 hours away and Oslo is 4 hours away. As most music teachers in Norway I don't teach on fridays, so unless anything special is happening, every weekend is a 3 day weekend.

I've already made some upgrades today and decided to change rooms. I'm now using the biggest of my livingrooms instead. The acoustics there are so nice that I'm still laughing. Just crazy good.

My first question for those in the know is:

What is the difference between the different Subkick models? I thought there was only one, but.............?


Seems I'll just have to start saving up money for a Symphony(as I'll need a lot of tracks) and whatever the new stationary Mac will be. I can always borrow some mics until I have my own.

After a some thinking and a conversation with the lady of the house….

We decided that the bedroom works best as a bedroom and also that this solution..




..is inferior to just replacing one of these windows in my bedroom and put in a door for her there…

Which means that this is the new drum room.





Excuse the mess. I’m in the process of moving in.

The stairs to the left of my guitar amps there goes upstairs to two big guest rooms where I’ll put my speaker cabinets.

Today I experiemented with my 57 on the snare and put my Edirol close in front of the bass drum. If I borrow a couple of condensers from work for overheads and a slightly bigger mixer, I just need something better to record video on and I’ll at least be up and going for getting myself some skype lesson and sharing some of my playing.

I’m borrowing a mic stand at work for the 57 now. Doing a little test, I was surprised by the great sound, but also confronted with how extremely bad my timing is when I’m not fully balanced and concentrated on the music.

I think I just gonna start with getting mics first as I guess with a few small mixers I can initially get by with just a few converter inputs if I put all the toms one one channel etc…

Maybe a friend, who’s upgrading, has something cheap I can buy or borrow to tie me over.

wow ! it looks awesome. love the ceiling. Build yourself some bass traps to tame the room a bit. I would get the room to sound killer before investing in anything else. As for the camera, an iPHONE (or similar) will do. It shoots great in full HD plus you can get something like an ollo clip from amazon to mess around with different lenses (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_ ... Caps%2C265)

Yeah . I have a lot to learn. All I really know about recording is where I prefer to put a 57 on my guitar amp.

I'll take my time, though. I'll spend a few years living a "Virgil-style" existence here trying to become a decent drummer, getting my health back and learn to record and be comfortable in a studio situation. This is the first time I've recorded myself play anything on the drums, so it's less than comfortable, but what better way to learn.

I'll get 52, a Subkick and som 98s for the toms as I know that's stuff I'll always have a use for.

I'm quite careful about buying stuff that I'm not sure about or that will last. I'll borrow some mics and mic pres over time and find out what I like before I spend money on it.

I mainly need to make some good tracks that I can bring to someone who can teach me what to do further, and then I can start looking in to that whole world a bit myself.

Today, I borrowed some crappy like $50 condensers at work. I borrowed a
Mackie mixer that has more mic inputs, but something was wrong with it. All is was able to do was to use two channels with the solo button on and send it to a stereo input ion the same 4-channel Behringer I've been using.

Anyway. This is how far we got today on the Behringer:

Channel 1 - 57 on snare
Channel 3 (stereo channel) - Edirol in fromt of bass drum
Channel 4 - Overheads from non functioning Mackie. (Guess I'll use this for the tom mics in the future.)

Tommy with band straight into tape input.

Headphone output split between my headphones and mic input of my crappy Vaio. (Yeah I know No jack to phono plugs available around here.)

Without really knowing, it seems to me that if I get the bass drum and overheads to sound good, half the job is done. A hi-hat mic would be nice as this clicketi-clack thing is really not what I hear up close.

Anyway this is where it's at one day later.
