Ricky Wellman was Miles Davis' last drummer. Before that he was one of the pre-eminent drummers from the influential DC gogo scene and played on the oft-sampled Chuck Brown gogo staple "Bustin Loose."
Mr Wellman defines underrated and unsung. His grooves were monstrous and his hihat work was second to none. He has a unique voice that makes me smile every time I hear him. RIP, Mr. Wellman.
This one is hot fire!

I saw him at Crazy Horse in Georgetown on New Years eve in 91. I was playing next door at The Saloon and the whole band would run over on breaks to check them out. It was The Gap Band keyboardist, Ricky, Mike Smith (DC Cop) and others. They played Bustin Loose and it was amazing to stand 5 feet away from Ricky playing. I did not know at the time he recorded that song. It was tight as hell.
