All these drumming-centric wank-off festivals really need to just stop. How about some music festivals with GOOD music? Is that really too much to ask for? Drumming in context please. I guess music for its own sake is passé. Attention spans now require fireworks, laser beams, strobe lights, and naked women.

Well Paul, it's a choice isn't it, nobody is forcing anyone to attend!! LOL!! NOT all Drum-Fest performances are drummers playing alone by themselves. Every now-and-then I do enjoy some cats expressing themselves around the kit alone... Not all drummers will grab me while soloing but some will, there will be meaningless wanking for sure.. I like the mix of both contexts, ie: With and/or without bands/tracks. Some of us like the Drummer-Hang too and these events are nice that way.

You make it sound like Music Festivals have been invaded/replaced by Drum Events all around the world! Nope, it's NOT all Doom&Gloom.. There's a bunch of Jazz Fests (+ many other genres) driving distance from where I live that are happening throughout the summer.. There's more such events than 20 years ago actually... Toronto Jazz Fest, Guelph Jazz Fest, Beaches Jazz Fest, Niagara Jazz Fest, Orangeville Jazz Fest, Markham Jazz Fest, Waterloo Jazz Fest, Port Hope Jazz, there may be more.

As for "Attention spans now require fireworks, laser beams, strobe lights, and naked women." Really?? This is the 1st time I've ever come across such reference for a Drum-Fest, especially Ralph's Fest (formerly Montreal Drum Fest). Ralph's a gentleman who's been a true Ambassador in Canada (North America to a degree) for musicians/drummers. His leadership and various accomplishments throughout the years in the industry call for some respect here.

Paul's just having a bad day...lol

Free market...the state of the music industry as it is, I am surprised more
musicians are not going on the clinic tour circuit. Already certain "name"
drummers have made most of their living doing these clinics...and they
are the "circus freak drummers" who can play crazy independent patterns
at lightening fast speeds. Why see a guy who can do what you can do?
It's entertainment. 90% of the stuff is not applicable to real life drumming.
On the women front...you ever go to NAMM? Sexy "females" in bikinis still
and will always draw attention with a room full of men.

Another both/and over either/or argument. Eat the melon, spit out the seeds.
If there is a market, it will be promoted...but most of these festivals are like NAMM,
it is the hang factor, drum fellowship, like minded cats...everything else is bonus.
Drummers are no different than anyone else, we like to meet guys that are successful...
celebrities (few admit it) but part of life. If you are a fan of Chicago, why not meet
Danny S? It then gives you a story to share with someone else...fuel for small talk
driving to work in your van pool, a picture to send to a buddy.

I would definitely go to this if I could...if just for DiCenso and Sucherman...all else
is candy. One thing in life is certain...1:1 energy cannot be compared to a video
or record. Hanging out with Virgil one day cannot be compared to any video...
then meeting Vinnie backstage, the hang, talk...all of that possible at these festivals.

Those "Jazz" festivals you mentioned are probably about 5% jazz. I wonder why people even feel the need to mention jazz in festivals anymore. I think it's a given that jazz is officially a four letter word, and not something anyone under the age of 40 cares about (unless they've been studying it in school).

My issue with drum festivals is that they promote the idea of drumming as a circus act. Other events that feature drums, like the PAS convention, have more of an educational focus.

Forget the "Jazz" reference, I happen to love Jazz so I naturally gravitate to that genre... You're right they're never 100% Jazz.. But my point was in reference to your statement "How about some music festivals with GOOD music? Is that really too much to ask for? Drumming in context please. I guess music for its own sake is passé." I am just saying there's still some GOOD Live music out there.

To me Drum-Offs type competition is the classic Circus Act and I too can't stand them.. Drum Fests will have some of that for sure but not all... With so many performances throughout the weekend, you have the choice to walk away, go for a smoke-break, a vape-break, a vegetable-soup-spoon-break and come back for the ones you like, problem solved. :D
