I think it's fair to say that YYZ's solo on Exit Stage Left wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for Barriemore Barlow's solo in Tull's Conundrum, a blueprint.

Just an observation on how drummers borrow from one another. Neil made it his own thing but the relation between the two solos is interesting...

Great point about Tull's Conundrum. Not just the drum solo, but there are similarities in many of the rhythmical melodies and phrases. Lee, Peart and Lifeson may have had more than a few moments listening to Jethro Tull.

Conundrum vs YYZ? Sequence of event points to Barlow influencing Peart, no? Kit wise? I'm not sure, I'd say the same.

In this 1979 interview, he highly praises Gadd. No mentions of Peart.

First time I heard Conundrum, I thought "Hey, that sounds a helluva lot like the ESL YYZ solo."

Neil had those concert toms going back a few years as well, Caress of Steel in 75. The ATWAS solo is similar to the ESL one.

They do have a similar style and way of going about things.

Good point on the kit itself.

As for Neil potentially influencing Barriemore's playing (as in Conundrum live solo), I just don't see it. 1974 to 1976 Rush was still an opening act in America (for Kiss, etc). Rush's 1st European tour was in 1977 while Barriemore's exposure to the world had already been in motion years before as he played on Tull's Thick As A Brick in 1971.

Rush opened for Jethro Tull many times. Neil didn't use concert toms until after those opening slots. Safe to say that Neil took a lot from Barrie. I think many drummers took ideas from Barrie.

Interesting, I don't see them hitting with Tull.

No doubt many were influenced by Barrie, he was an innovator and raised the barre. His playing on the Yngwie record is amazing.
