Beat hit,
What are you asking? Sell "these"? These what?
The names you see are all autographs on ONE drumhead.
No, the drumhead is not for sale. I am sharing this with
the members here, elated that I got another "must have"
autograph and am looking forward to getting the final
three--------for now.

Hi Rodge and all,
I started getting autographs on this head in 1966. Look at the date @ Gene Krupa's autograph.
I met him first and it began from there. Here is the article DRUMHEAD MAGAZINE did
on me/drumhead. Don't forget to read below where I met Billy Cobham and what we
did......I never thought they would print that !

Ray Lombardo’s Big Head!
By Charlie Weinmann
It all started in 1966 when
Gene Krupa signed his
name to a 16-inch calf hide
drumhead in his green room
at the Showboat Lounge in
Washington, D.C.
Ray Lombardo was 16
years old and Krupa was
coming to D.C. to play with
his quartet. Ray’s father was
a non-musician with a love
for big band music, which he
instilled in his son, and had
suggested Ray bring the calf
hide to the show in hopes
that Gene would sign it.
Ray began taking drum
lessons at 13. He championed
Krupa, Louie and Elvin even
after The Beatles broke in
’64. In 1970, Ray passed
the audition to be the jazz
drummer for The U.S. Army
Blues Jazz Band, and spent
three years in his hometown
of Washington, DC, where
he quickly rose to the rank
of Staff Sergeant. Ray looks
back fondly on his time in the
service, and one memory in
particular: Gene Krupa had
given a drum clinic in the
area, and Ray was invited to
have dinner with him.
“He actually stood behind
me as I sat in with some of
the Army Band cats,” Ray
remembered. “I have some
great photos of Gene standing
three feet from me watching me
as I played. He probably couldn’t
believe how badly I played, but
that’s another story.”
Gene died the next year in 1973.
Eight years prior, back at the
Showboat Lounge, Ray and his
father did get to meet Gene, who
graciously agreed to sign the head.
“Gene, always the gentleman, of
course said yes and had some
very kind words,” said Ray. “I was
so stunned, I did not know what to
say…after seeing him portrayed
in the ‘Gene Krupa Story,’ and of
course, all the records I had.”
That first signature sparked
something in Ray, and he decided
to hang on tight to that drum head.
Since that day, Ray has collected
over 150 signatures from the most
recognized names in the history of
drumming, plus a number of noteworthy non-drummer signatures,
all of which have been scrolled on
the very same calf hide that Gene
rested the side of his hand on all
those years ago.
Today, Ray is sharing some of
the encounters he’s had with the
legends who’ve agreed to sign
what’s now, surely, considered
a historical artifact. Ray will tell
you that these encounters hardly
involved any dramatic or exciting
details, though his dedication to
carrying around the single head for
so many years stands by itself as
something to be marveled at.

RINGO STARR
Ringo and his All-Starr band were to play the
Merriweather Post Pavilion, outside D.C., in Columbia,
MD in 1989. Somehow, I was able to get the phone
number to backstage. I then asked for the drummer,
Jim Keltner, and reached him immediately. I introduced
myself over the phone and said I was a fan of his and
Ringo’s and that I would like to have his and Ringo’s
autograph. He took my name and offered me a
backstage pass.
I went to the Merriweather Post Pavilion, backstage,
and it was only Ringo, Jim and myself. Ringo was totally
cool, signed the head and an 8x10 black and white
photo from an LP I had brought. Too bad cell phones
weren’t around, I would have probably gotten a photo.
TONY WILLIAMS
I saw Tony with his Lifetime group at The Childe
Harold in Washington, D.C. I had taped the show on
a little recorder, 1976, and went upstairs with the band
to hang, and my girlfriend started saying how we had
a nice bootleg of the show. As soon as they heard
this, they confiscated my tape...bummer. But, after the
show, Tony was cool and took a nice smiling photo with
me. At that same venue around the same time, Boo [Art
Blakey] played the room and he was totally cool, too.
ELVIN JONES
Elvin Jones provided many memorable meetings.
Every time he came to town, which was often–Blues
Alley, free gigs in the park at night, Kennedy Center,
Left Bank Jazz in Baltimore and many other venues–I
would go backstage and say, “Hi” and he would always
greet me with a bear hug. I learned to only say hi
BEFORE he got all sweaty from playing! [laughs] Many
great photos of me and Elvin.
BUDDY RICH
In 1969, Buddy played The Cellar Door, Georgetown,
Washington, D.C. He was ferocious. Wow. Next
morning, he did a drum clinic at Constitution Hall, I went
backstage and met him, got the autograph and a photo!
BILL COBHAM
Around 1974-75, Bill played with Mahavishnu
Orchestra at Constitution Hall. I got in free with a
buddy who knew him and we were invited backstage
before they went on. My buddy had some hash that he
offered to Bill, McLaughlin and the other cats–they all
accepted; we got high, then they went on and played
that incredible music!
PETER ERSKINE
In 1974, Stan Kenton’s band played a gig at a high
school in VA. I went and got backstage and met a
young Peter Erskine. He was so cool and played like a
seasoned pro, but with fresh new ideas. He signed the
head. Through the years, I went to see him when he
was in town…in Maynard’s band, his own group that he
recorded with and of course Weather Report.
Once, when I saw him at an open-air concert in
D.C., with Larry Coryell and the 11th House (yes, I
have Alphonse Mouzon’s autograph too), Weather
Report closed the show. When I went backstage to say
hi to Peter, he said I should get Joe Zawinul, Wayne
Shorter and Jaco to sign…I did and am so grateful
to Peter. Peter signed it again and put, “Again! Peter
Erskine,” and he dated it.
I can’t say enough about Pete’s friendliness and
encouragement. He has come over to the house in the
mid ‘80s and I fed him. I’ll never forget when I gave him
a ride from his gig in Baltimore to my place…he saw
my gigging set and surprised, he said, “Wow, what do
you use them for? Target practice?” I had a beat up set
that I didn’t mind playing. And now, he is helping me to
get this drumhead to be shown to other drummers who
might like to read about this one of a kind head.
PHILLY JOE JONES
What can I say…Philly…so rudimentally polished, but
swinging. Like my encounters with many of the greats,
when they came to play in Washington, D.C., I would
show up and ask for the signature. He played a small
club in D.C. in the 1970s, I sat close by the band and
after a set, walked up, introduced myself, asked for the
signature, and he signed it.
CARMINE APPICE
Just saw him two years ago for the first time. I had
followed him in Vanilla Fudge in the ‘60s...always dug
his stuff. I asked him how to go about getting Dino
Danelli’s autograph. He said, “Good luck!” About five
years ago, I found Dino’s cell number and we spoke.
He said if I get to NYC, give a call and maybe we could
meet up for the autograph. I haven’t gotten to NYC yet.
Carmine was very happy to sign the head and I got a
photo.
VINNIE COLAIUTA
My main man of all time. I went to Zildjian Day in
NYC, 1984, to hear him for the first time and get his
autograph. I went downstairs after his set where all the
people, including Peter Erskine, were hanging. I got my
autograph from Vinnie.
Vinnie’s genius is so inspiring to me. He is one of
those drummers who inspires without the drummer
thinking he can actually phrase like Vinnie, but Vinnie
just inspires you to be your best and try to be yourself,
which will lead to a unique or individual sound–which
is what Vinnie has–a totally identifiable style that can’t
be copied.
