We've discussed "the ladder" before on some other threads - I think I understand and have imitated this lick - but, just to clarify - is there specific pattern for "the ladder"?

alternating hands interleaved with alternating feet (like you're climbing a ladder).

of course - makes more sense now!

well I was doing it this way - just thought ladder meant going up and down the toms and not the movement of going up and down a ladder -

I can't say anything about the singer/keyboardist... It's like Vinnie with Re-Cool or Ikaru Utada...

But, simple/effective groove here.

Cliff has been on this gig longer than any other drummer. He left it to do Manhattan Transfer for about 5 years and then returned. I believe Tom Brechtlein took over the Transfer and then Hass. I think it's been around 22 years that he's been doing this gig with Michel. I saw him with Michel when he was 22. The hook up is beautiful, and he's pretty much played in the same vain since the age of 22. His vocabulary expanded after he moved to NYC but his general vibe is the same, and I'm glad because I dig it. I believe Cliff to be the only drummer to successfully come out of that Weckl sound. I love the whole section in 6. Go Cliff!

I really love cliffs playing, and ive bought a few of the lessons on his site, (if you havent checked them out then do - they're excellent)
The thing i cant help thinking is, that trio is pretty much the only acoustic piano trio in the world where you can play those kinds of ideas at that volume isnt it?
Amazing playing.
