Postby Victor Lipman » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:42 pm

....while watching/listenting to this, from 2:18 to 2:34 :

They are both similar triplet phrasings orchestrated between the toms/kick. Different contexts and other "flavors" going on though.

Remember there are really only so many rhythms that can occur (that are pleasing to the ear) using simple stickings like that..

haha yeah- what yamahaplayer says is true, but i wouldn't be surprised if andy copped that lick from that vinnie vid, because he's doing the same sort of groove and goes into those gadd sextuplets right after, just like vinnie does in that solo. plus andy is a young gun and I'm sure regularly visits youtube for fun, ideas, and inspiration. absolutely killing player though, no doubt.

what is the sticking there though? are they sextuplets as follows (f = foot)?

Rllffl R

i always kinda wished terry or one of those master transcribers would transcribe this solo :D ... i feel like it's one of the few vinnie solos that a non-alien drummer could more easily replicate. it's got chops but more so a killer feel and groove.

I don't think you'd have to twist Andy's arm to get him to confess to copping Vinnie licks. I think he's done some interesting things with the concepts and he's coming from an entirely different point of view because of his preferred kit configuration, but you can definitely hear Vinnie in his playing when he's stretching. Where's Mark Pusey? What's it gonna take to get Fizz on this board, sir? ;)

It's actually a Tony lick for the record. That's VERY much a Mr. Williams move.

Listening back a second time it sounds more like groups of 3 in a different note value, could be superimposed or 5's, hard to say.

I have no doubt, and have heard recordings of myself where I went "Wow, that's totally a so-so lick" but you know, that's how influence works. And it's only a momentary instant at that, surrounded by a lot of other notes. If my little brain thought it worked in that spot, so be it.

Study Tony's playing you can hear big time where Vince got his (self admitted) influence.
