New video of myself

Postby sturla » Sun Mar 27, 2011 10:04 am

Hey guys!

I just uploaded a little video of myself playing along to the classic funk tune "Talkin´ Loud and Saying Nothin´" by James Brown.
Very very basic stuff, and not the lick/chops fest that some other guys put out. But I just tried to find the the groove and pocket (and hopefully keep it!)
Sometimes harder than it seems.

I find it is very helpful to do this and I learn a lot about my own drumming when I just recently haven gotten a DSLR camera to shoot video with, and record myself properly as well. Afterwards I just edit it together in iMovie.
Playing along to tunes is getting really fun again. (just like I did when I was in my teens, playing along to all my favorite tunes).

I maybe should try to get some Play-along minus drums stuff....

If any one feel like coming with some pointers or tips, playingwise or otherwise, it´d be much appreciated.
I just wanted to say that this was really fun to do.

Nice stuff. I suggest placing the camera behind or to the side of you if possible.

I've always had fun with the Steve Houghton material from Essential Styles. Everything's so clean and it's usually more groove or section oriented so you get to play the same thing you're learning over and over. I had a LOT of trouble getting the Neo-Cuban bass patterns down until playing to the Houghton stuff. He had one on there called "fusion brite" or something like that I could play over and over and over.

Love that yellow kit (I've seen pics you've posted before)!

And I like to see you just groovin' without using the toms, also.

That clip made me feel good, and I think that's a good thing to take into account when you decide on how you want to approach a tune.

One of the reasons I like grooving in that manner so much is that it taps into the hypnotic qualities of music, and just carries the player and the listener along with it.

Good choice of material, as well!

Sturla, what crash cymbal is the one you have in front of you, between your first and second tom ?
I am in the searching phase for a new crash.
