Carl Palmer didn't play drums on this album; he only was a live drummer with Arthur Brown. He played on Atomic Rooster's first LP, although.

I almost worshipped ELP and Carl Palmer in the early 70s, and I saw them in Liverpool on the Brain Salad Surgery Tour from which Henry's linked videos are taken at a later date. So it came as something of a shock when I bought a couple of CDs again recently to discover that while Palmer's technique was great, his timekeeping is actually pretty damn shabby.

I here you, and I agree that something is off. But, I don't think it's CP's time. I think the music demands a lot of precision and there are spots where the players just aren't locked in. For some reason, it seems that they just left any imperfections in the recordings.

No, it's definitely his time. Check out "Heat of the Moment" by Asia. Check the tempo at the beginning against the tempo near the end. Scary.

No wonder my playing is so off. No, really, I was recently listening to those first two Asia albums and his time is off and his feel/beat placement is all over the map as well. It doesn't settle.
