Herbie, Vinnie, and The Gift

So, without much planning, my wife and I traveled to Jacksonville to see Herbie Hancock -- with Vinnie (Jacksonville Jazz Festival).
The event was free, but of course you could get tickets so you could sit closer. But, as I said this was a spur of the moment thing. I'm not generally super fond of these kinds of events (at least in some ways), because they're noisy and the sound can be bad, but . . . . Anyway we got there and got to the venue just before DMS (Duke, Miller, and Sanborn) went on. I don't know who was drumming -- we were very far away and I couldn't see (someone here probably knows). The sound wasn't great, and I began to have doubts about coming. We were standing against a wall, blocked from the stage, and way, far away.
Then, a couple came by (never saw them before in our lives) -- they were leaving (no clue why), and they just handed us their VIP tickets.
I watched Herbie and Vinnie from about 30 feet from the stage. First time seeing Vinnie in person (btw, he's not bad). I got Herbie's autograph.
Really good show -- a scorching version of Cantaloupe Island amongst others.
Had a blast.
And no, stuff like doesn't normally happen to me (it never does).

I have tickets to see Herbie (and Vinnie) on Thursday in Greenville, SC. Since you were able to Herbie's autograph, do you think I should attempt to get Vinnie's autograph? Before/after show? - I'm not one to usually get a pic/autograph, but this is an exception. This will be my first time seeing Vinnie live as well. I've always missed him when he's come through - Sting - it was Manu, Five Peace Band - it was Blade - When I lived in Boston and attending Berklee, Vinnie came through for the Zildjian Award to Steve Gadd - I was on the road.
Now, it looks like I'll finally get to see him live. FINALLY
How was the show?

The show was very good -- I grinned the entire time. I had some small binoculars, so I was able to zero in on Vinnie and see his moves, and if I moved to the side I could watch his left foot -- which was very fast and precise indeed.
I can't say anything about your hopes for an autograph from Vinnie. Herbie came out afterward to sign, but I never saw Vinnie off the stage. Still, hope springs eternal for you.

I just got my ticket for Thursday in SC as well! I ordered them over the phone to assure I got a seat on the audience right side of the stage (looks like Vinnie is usually center or stage left). Front row box seat. Hope its as good of a view as it sounds.
This will be my first time seeing Vinnie live too!
I am so damn excited!

He was stage left when I saw him. That might depend on venue, but Herbie has a large grand piano, so I'm guessing that it is pretty standard.
Have fun!
