Cliff is great! Sounds like a pissed off Weckl on the drums, but also coming into his own sound. Piano player could use some tranquilizers.

Weckl's stint with Camilo in the early 80s really defined the drumming style for Michel's music. Dave's songo-ish approach to latin music comes from what Camilo wanted to hear drumming wise.
I read an article where Camilo said that he liked to play with young drummers because he could still mold them and show them how he likes the rhythms to be played. It's no surprise that Dave's follower Joel Rosenblatt was also young and sounded like Weckl. Then followed Cliff who at 21 sounded also like Weckl on the Michel's albums he played on. Camilo is known as really demanding on the drummer.
I went to an El Negro clinic and I asked him to talk about his stint with Camilo when Cliff left. He said it was a bad experience for him. Being a cuban rhythms master and not so young he really disliked Michel always asking him to play like Dave Weckl. He said Michel wanted to go deeper in the afro-cuban yet he demanded that he played like a gringo. But I really liked how the band sounded with Horacio. Next was cuban drummer Dafnis Prieto. Although very young, Dafnis had a really personal style and was an accomplished composer and arranger. Michel and Dafnis styles didn't fit at all IMO. Now Michel is back with Cliff who plays the style he likes. I'm sure he would like Dave to come but will it happen?...
