I have this book Illusions in Rhythm for Drum Set by Osami Mizuno in collaboration by the one and only mr. Vinnie Colaiuta is from 06. Anyone had this book? how do you study it? It's pretty hardcore from the beginning...!!!

Any help and/or experience will be appreciated...!!!

I have it, but cant really offer any suggestions. I bought it only because I knew Osami was a student of Dawson, and that the book relates to Tony Williams and Vinnie Colaiuta.

Its a very difficult subject, obviously, and combined with the fact that its not well-written, and doesn't come with audio examples, and I think you're much better off just working with the Gavin Harrison books; Ive had much more success with them.

If I came across as harsh, forgive me. Its not poorly written, musically or grammatically. It was wrong of me to describe it like that. I should have said its not well written "when compared to Gavin Harrison's books".

I just think that Gavin Harrison's books are much more in depth and provide audio examples, so are much easier to follow along and learn from.

You're 1000000000% correct, this book is too condense & it get you in the subject way to fast, Gavin is more a teacher, I couldn't agree more...!!!

If this is the same book I am thinking about, it is a second volume of the teachings and concepts of Alan Dawson by a former student, mixed in with some of his own concepts. I haven't actually taken the time to work out of it. I have many books, that I bought with the intent of studying them, but it was too advanced for me at the time. I set them down and wait a few years and come back to them. I have found in MY case it's usually a matter of getting and learning notation and getting your reading down before tackling the information. I'd suggest taking it slowly with what you can understand and work your way thru it. Like the old how to eat an elephant joke, one bite at a time...
I have a book by a Jan Prins. Had it for probably at least 10-15 years. It deals with permutations using the hi hat and integrating that into funk like rhythms. I've had a friend who looked at it and he surmised that it was similar in concept to playing David Garibaldi's stuff. I go to it, try somethings. Get frustrated because it sounds crazy. Put it down, and wait another few years to see if I've progressed to be able to read it down cold. Not there yet. There is so much out there to cover...
Don't fret. Some people resonate as teachers better than others. Gavin's stuff is out there too. He also has the benefit of videos, that make it much easier to grasp the concepts...so be kind...and patient.

No, you're thinking of the John Ramsey book, which covered Dawsons system of rudiments and his warmup exercise, called "The Rudimental Ritual" that systematically involved all the rudiments (similar to Tommy Igoe's "Lifetime Warmup", but about 40 years older, lol). I found it to be a very good book, especially the part where he discusses various ways to interpret "Syncopation".

And Ive done the same thing, where you put a book away for years, and then come back to it. Sometimes Im ready, sometimes Im not, lol...

Actually, Osami Mizuno has written a 2 volume series on the teachings of Alan Dawson (Not as easy to find as Ramsey`s book, but they`re out there. Info on how to order them is on Osami`s website), as well as the book mentioned in this thread which he wrote in collaboration with Vinnie.
