Help with mounting Yamaha YESS system

Postby DSOP » Tue Sep 06, 2011 3:13 pm

If you currently own Yamaha drums with the original YESS mounting system (not the gynormous new version), I could use your help.

I need to know where to drill the holes to attach the mounts onto my toms. One tom is 8x12, the other 9x13.

A) I need to know how far from the batter edge to drill.
B) I'm not sure if the distance is the same for all toms, or if it varies according to depth.
C) I also need to know where to drill the holes for the flange on the bass drum which accepts the tom holder. If you could give me the distance from the batter side of the kick, that would help too.

Grazie!

Hi,

I don't have a 13" with the YESS mount but I have a 12 & 14.
On my Maple Customs (Power Toms) the 12 is 1 1/2" and the 14 is 1 7/8th inch down from the bearing edge.
Maybe split the difference for your 13".

I had that system put on my Custom Fortune Drum kit. The 12 was 1 3/4" down.

The tom mount on the bass measures 10 inches from the edge.

Please note that I did not take the heads and rims off, but these measurements should be very close.

I would suggest you use larger washers for the inside of the shells. That way the stress of the mount will be spread out over a larger surface.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! But is that from the edge to actual holes I would need to drill, or is that from the edge of the shell to the edge of the mounting bracket?

IIRC, it depends on the model drum (RC, MC etc), and the nodal points also vary from size to size. The retrofit kits had templates. I'm sure Jim Haler at Yamaha would provide you with the info if you email him.

No response from Haler, or Yamaha. WTF?

Hmm ... he used to be fast to reply. Day or two tops. He goes by ' Drumnhands ' on a number of forums.

You could also try Greg, if he still works there: gcrane at yamaha dot com

edit: email typo
