Re: MODERN DRUMMER FESTIVAL 2011 PREVIEW
i'd actually consider getting this. hadn't been to an md fest in years then got a last-minute invite to the event and pretty much enjoyed every performer. missed the 2 rileys though, which was a shame.
tain's thing is all performance, no clinic. if i recall correctly, the only speaking he did was calling off the tunes. it was all really dense and intense, per tain protocol.
the horacio thing was a fiesta. i think there were 11 players in all plus a fado dancer and beyond the performance, negro's red sparkle shoes were a happening unto themselves.
gil sharone really impressed me. not into the music he plays, but his clinic was really solid. he showed a lot of swing chops and had a very organized and passionate way of presenting information.
gotta hand it to aquiles, too. he got his death on and the dynamics did not waver at any point. got to watch him from behind the stage, which was cool.
all in all, worth the price of admission, which went way up from last i'd been. but the output was solid.

I'm a sucker for drum DVDS so I always buy the MD Festival discs and I always enjoy at least SOME of the performances> With this set I'm particularly keen to see the John Riley section.

Great to see John Riley explaining a real African 6/8, he doesn't have the "thing", but he can play it.
But Daddy Tain is the shit !!!

By the way....it's 2011! Why aren't they going to offer this on Blu-ray?

^^ I get goose-bumps at the thought of a new drumming Blu-Ray. DTS HD Master Audio is a gift from the aural gods.

Trevor Lawrence almost reminded me a bit of Gergo in that clip!
John Riley has got to be one of my favorite educators on the drums.
I am not impressed with the overall sound(s) of the kits but then, I never was with any previous MD Festival tapes/dvds.
John Riley's drums sounded good from that clip though.
