Awesome grooves. But did he really need his usual massive kit with a billion toms for those two songs? Seems a bit overkill to me.

When you hire Sir Simon Phillips you get the entire deal. Not overkill at all. The groove and fill at the end of the clip is first degree murder.

Still one of my favorites of Simon's output:

I think Simon uses/plays every piece of his drumset on those tunes.
And he often says: "If I would take off some piece of this set, the general sound of the kit changes."

I remember reading my first interview with Simon back in the Symbiosis days, I guess.
Also remember waiting for a gig running about 2 hours late because of him tuning his drums.

Always said that was his instrument end of story.

Also said then he wanted to put together a smaller jazz kit which I've see in use one time on that one recording.

It's his instrument, his sound and I guess it wouldn't really be Simon without those melodic things both toms and octabans. He goes pretty light on the cymbals side, though.

Wow Paul...never saw that Simon stuff. I love the small kit and being able to see him play. His touch is hard to envision with the monster set. really good. I dig that more than anything else I've seen of him except to say there is some real good Hiromi vids out there

Completely different level than the Burning for Buddy stuff. Actually sounds like a jazz player here.

Heavy Duty jazz fusion. This channel has some incredible shows.

23 years old.

Gotta give it up to Simon...he has not changed his kit set up in all these many years...
Still has the same style...not very ergonomic, but pulls it off. Passed on the Freddie
generation of change! lol This is great chronological history above...at 23 his style
is pretty much solidified. Could we then say that at a young age, most of our development
has taken place or is this just for the very advanced? If we all had videos of our
playing at 23 compared to 43, would 85% of our core style be the same? Just thinking
out loud...
