I was wondering if anyone here uses one of these or has seen one in use? It seems like a good idea in theory but I'd like to know how it sounds.

I had one years ago, before I realized how wonderful it was. I wound up giving it to a good friend of mine before I knew how to put it to good use (understanding how it can change the feel, resonance, etc). I really could kick myself now, although it did go to great player. It does work well, and I think its well-thought out in that you can adjust the placement and pressure of it. From what I understand, they're no longer being manufactured, although you may be able to find some new old stock somewhere. Interestingly, when I took lessons with Gary, he didnt have them to sell, you had to go to a different company to order them.

Im very biased, yes. I think Gary is just about the greatest drum teacher ever (as well as the most difficult to please). Be careful ordering them, as your money may be held up while they spend months trying to locate one to sell you. One of the sites says "will backorder". Thats not a good sign, but if you can get your hands on one, do it!

Every post (on here and other boards) I've read by you on Gary, his materials and teaching, you always express that passion. I really like that, man. It's wonderful to have a teacher/mentor that has had that kind of effect on your playing.

Well, I have average skills at best, but I learned from him how to be creative, more than anything else. So while other drummers can play a paradiddle at 260 bpm, I can only play it at 160, BUT, I can play it 50 different ways at 160, lol...

I know I talk about him a lot; if I ever go overboard, just tell me to quit it already

It's never overboard when talking about Gary. I can hardly think of many more important figures in modern drum teaching. I've taken SO much out of his books, concepts and teacher to student knowledge passing (my teacher studied with him back in the day) that I can safely say I woudn't be half the musician I'm today without him.
The muffler is a great invention, but I was never able to get one
