Nice, thanks for the link. That I think raises an important question. Where does your brain have to be in term of concentration on the way between your instrument and the overall context of the song? You can't drift too far away from playing drums because you have to control what you play, but according to him, you can't forget about the wider setting of the song and what is appropriate to play in terms of dynamics, licks, fills, grooves, etc.

It's really not playing the drums for me, it's about playing what sounds good at the time. Playing what you hear. There are sometimes when I hear a lot and play interesting things. Then there are times when I do not hear what to play, so it's more going thru the motions. Hearing what is on the bandstand is the starting point and has a lot to do with what to play. Of course this about jazz styles or impromptu sessions. But any situation I am in, I am always pretending it is the first time i have ever played the song. That way, it keeps me fresh.
