Agreed, just bad sounding drums are always just bad sounding drums, regardless of who's playing or the genre. They may work when band has an (amateur) garage band vibe, but an improvement is still an improvement.

I think he refers to some kind of tuning... Ringy, nasty overtones type of thing.
The pristine Weckl sound we all love would no gel with some kinds of musics...

Brilliant player for what he is doing. The problem for me is most of the music is not enjoyable. I bought a Hella album with vocals and it was unlistenable. Hill's style is not based on any normal trends of playing drums, it is anti-groove. If you like underground music that bucks trends, Zach Hill's music should do it for you.
