VINNIE COLAIUTA - Recent activity...

Postby Juan Expósito » Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:25 pm

Was it necessary to put the second name of Vinnie on the title of the topic? :D

There are 2-3 open topics about Vinnie and I didn´t know where to put this or others recent videos or other kind of activity of VC.
So, Vinnie´s recent activity and more or less recent videos...
Well, I say 2008 is recent.
I love Vinnie´s china cymbal sound:

I would want a GOOD Paiste/Ludwig demo video here, so that "Paiste welcomes Vinnie" is out for now...

recent activity? Colaiuta is back out on tour with Sting - a tour that started this week and I'm attending the gig in AC this coming Saturday. This latest tour is basically a reunion of the Ten Summoners Tales lineup of Dom Miller, David Sancious and Colaiuta with Peter Tickell on violin and mandolin, Jo Lawry on backing vocals, violin and percussion. I passed on The Police reunion but I could not pass up the opportunity to see Colaiuta and Sancious on stage with Sting once again.

I saw Vinnie with Sting last night at Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA. This was my first time to the venue and everyone told me how wonderful it was and there isn't a bad seat in the place. While true, the sound was bad. The band lacked energy and Vinnie's performance was not up to expectations. He seemed to be having a lot of trouble with the hardware. The tech had to come out several times to fix stuff. Vinnie was really holding back - extremely disappointing performance.

Those formula 602 Paiste's sound like garbage in that environment. It's not his sound. I tried convincing myself to like them. The Zildjians were much fuller - the China in particular - the Paistes are very weak and too thin sounding. His 20 oriental kicks the 22 Paiste's ass.
Vinnie on Gretsch sounded much better than the Ludwigs too. The Ludwigs were very "tubby" sounding. His snare, which usually cracks - was a thud. Maybe the venue and the sound contributed, but overall I was very disappointed.

The band sounded bored. It wasn't the same level of performance/energy from the mid 90s (David Sancious is back on keys - replacing Dominic Miller's son on guitar).

Seems that's the way things are going. Hope they're a little more on fire in Oslo next weekend.

Vinnie is just as world class as ever. He's a master accompanist almost like the drumming is incidental . He's just there for everyone else on stage and that's what music means for him these days. I still get his playing and it's still a blessing....
