Oh, I agree...there are changes and they can definitely be heard...to me more in the open-ness of sound more that anything else.

I have 2 of Weckl's vids from 2000,and the Test For Echo set. Weckl speaks of putting his grip a bit more towards the center of the stick instead of far on the back. He also speaks of thumb and middle finger being the fulcrum point and not the pointer finger. He raised up his rack toms and put them uneven as to handle the natural movement of playing his trad grip. The ride cymbal came down and slightly to the right. The sticks are also just flopping around in the hand, not clenched down. Neil spoke of everything being circular and the note is just one point in the circle and that the 99% of the motion that is not heard is more important than the note itself. Neil definitely changed up his kit as per Gruber's recommendations due to his personal ergonomics. Steve Smith also makes a big deal of the grip changes but as far as I can remember he doesnt throw out Gruber's name anywhere near as much as Weckl and Peart. One other thing they all speak of with Gruber is let the stick do the work. I know that was a Buddy Rich thing for the longest time and Gruber and him were buds. I didnt have to study with Freddy to egt that last one though. i thought that was a given by now.

Keep in mind that all those players, besides Gruber, went through a procces called AGEING!
They all are more mature and I would spect someone to play different 30 years later... I used to hear Weckl much more than I do know, but in my book he´s still a hero and a drum legend and would love to see him play live more often if he´s touring near my city...
