Haven't been to this forum since 2012. It's nice to be back. I caught this video from Steve Hass' twitter and blew me away. His time is pretty much the most solid I've ever heard live. I've been working on my time constancy lately and it it has been an area I listen to when checking out gigs. Nearly everyone I've seen rushes or drags at certain points. Not Hass, at least not here or in the other videos in this thread. I also enjoy his use of choppy fills and double bass behind a singer. Not just any singer. Patti Austin is one of the masters.

Interesting Tom tuning... 3rd one is higher than the 2nd if I'm not mistaken.

Deep Fried, really? Do you still think that after the fills at 1:54 and 6:37? For someone as creative as Hass is, especially with Ravi Coltrane, John Scofield, Tim Lefebvre and Adam Rogers, he sure plays these handcuffed gigs very well.

Wow. 100 medium? Not for me. Love how easy the single strokes are for him. Those are extremely difficult to maintain with just a single kick. Keeping the H.H going is just another level. My legs hurt thinking about it.

Getting those singles between the hands and feet not to flam with the 8th note hi hat is still such a struggle for me. Hass eats it all for breakfast...

Interesting 2 drum setup and approach here. Very different for Steve. I have to say, I love the groove, looseness and form of this improv.

Just caught a clip of Hass on the Today show with Patti Austin. It was jazz trio and it was swinging so hard. without rushing or laying back.

The man's time is sickening. It's strange to me how the most working drummers get the least attention, yet the drummers who are forced to form their own bands in order to showcase their chops, and the drummers who are life long clinicians without playing in bands, are the most popular. With the exception of Vinnie of course. I like this HOD forum because the real working drummers are mentioned often.
