blurb help!

Postby john lamb » Wed Jun 05, 2013 9:54 am

I am putting the finishing touches on my new book, but I've got some serious block when it comes to the descriptive blurb about it. I figured I'd come here and do a little marketing research... though the book is not aimed specifically at drummers. Any suggestions? thanks!

'A Matter Of Time redefines rhythm based on what effect neuroscience says rhythm has on the brain. Lamb examines the implications of neuroscience on our understanding of rhythm and what it means for improving music performance.'

The second sentence is effective, I like it. The first kicks my skeptical side awake, and that side wonders if you can actually redefine rhythm? It's been pretty well defined for some time.

Thanks for the feedback - it is exactly the kind that I am looking for.

Rhythm, however, is not well defined. There are myriad problems with how it is currently defined, not the least of which is the idea if time is nearly completely written out of the equation. To analyze rhythm currently, you need to put it into staff notation form and remove and information about the tempo, rubato, fermatas, etc. Rushing or dragging destroys the current definition of rhythm.

However, all of the above makes perfect sense. I also define groove according to current research. Should I include that?

I'm not sure what the first sentence means....

Do you mean using current modern neuroscience "A Matter Of Time" expands the definition and meaning of rhythm internally thus helping musicians express it better externally?

I would word the first sentence a bit more simple.

"A Matter of Time" redefines rhythm according to it's neuroscientific effects on the brain.

How about this?

A Matter of Time examines the implications of neuroscience on our understanding of rhythm and what it means for improving music performance. Lamb, who holds a B.S. in Biology, Psychology and Music with a Masters in Education simply explains how the brain resonates with rhythm and why rhythm is best understood in this way.

How about something more forward leaning to pique curiosity -

A Matter of Time utilizes neuroscience to examine our natural relation to rhythm with an emphasis on improving musical performance.

I'm writing a book right now. any of you want to do the text/dialogue for me ? lol
seriously, I have 90% written and would love a few peeps opinion/perspective on in. I find myself a little hung up on how much or how little to explain. most books of the past(that i grew up with) were pretty much just an intro (text) and pages of stuff for you/us the reader to figure out. That being said and teaching at an institute where everything must be broken down step by step. Where do you see and think the book protocol is going?? more text or keep it like the old? Thx for you're input ahead of time.
