Good for them. They have decent gigs that don't involve pizza delivery.

I've got such a dude-crush on Josh Freese. I love that he looks totally into every gig I've seen him do. That guy freakin' earns it-- how cool would it be to hire a guy with a resume like that, have him backing your band live, sounding awesome, and looking as into it as he does. Dude's a pro and a stud.

Okay, where was I?...

One thing sure, I'd like to be behind those artists :

- Seal
- Justin Timberlake
- Sting
- James Taylor
- Chaka Khan
- Jill Scott

Maybe Madonna too, but I would loved to be behind her back in the days, when Sugar Foot or Omar were there, great music, awesome show.
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

One can be thinking wrong if he thinks these two things:

1. Playing with a mainstream artist is boring.
2. Anyone can play that music.

Because:
1. It can be boring/painful with many artists, no matter their style or "artistic height"...
2. One can think that you don´t need to be that superguitar player to be with that singer. But that music sounds awesome (one can like it or not) because of the first line "workers" that are playing it.

If I´m a star singer or whatever I want the best arround me, from the lights man to the guitar player.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. I always thought contemporary drummers worked hard specifically to get those kind of gigs. It's not as if they can make a living in a dissolved studio scene or by playing $100 club gigs. They want the paycheck and really, you must be a highly developed time player and all around musician to get those gigs. Simply because everyone wants them. I consider jazz musicians to be the highest level of monster musicians, but you won't see Bill Stewart, Antonio Sanchez or Ari Hoenig playing with Rihanna or Sting. That's not their goal. Josh Freese and Kenny Aronoff along with the others mentioned work hard to get those gigs. Its really one of the only ways to make a substantial income. FYI Carlock didn't play for Mayer very long and that was 2 or more years ago. Aaron Sterling has been with Mayer for almost a couple of years already.

Keith Carlock was subbing for Steve Jordan. I HIGHLY doubt he was fired from the gig.
