dig that toto in tokyo vid. can hear the hi hats pretty good. jeff had some solid time live. it's like he's playing in the studio. really played the parts and kept such solid time. no uncalled for embellishments.

Kurtis...you nailed it friend! I saw one of Jeff's last performances at the
Ventura theater with TOTO...it was STUNNING how perfect his time was.
It was studio perfect LIVE...effortless grace...bass drum hits that were
exactly placed...you would think time is time, but I am telling you,
I noticed his bass drum hits NOT for technical prowess, but for musicality.
Rarely do I sense this with others...he WAS the coolest cat on stage!

His playing here is ridiculous...the whole band is nuts. I can only imagine the parties in Cleveland after this show. Ha!

There were countless bands throughout the nation playing really similar to Toto. They just had that one more, and the pedigree.

"There were countless bands throughout the nation playing really similar to Toto."

I hear ya Lang, but there were not bands playing Goodbye Girl and Tale of a Man!
TOTO merged R&B, ballads, pop, funky grooves and rock together ala the name "TOTO"
in a way nobody did. As a kid I bought the first LP for Hold the Line and hated the
R&B stuff, Manuela Run, etc... One buddy listened to the record with me the day
I bought it and said, "See, I told you this sucked" The song they never play anymore
which astounds me is "All Us Boys" --that song killed in every way! Why that is not on
the radar like Hold the Line I will never understand!

Well, I've grown since then...but it took years to get into groove stuff and out of
rock drumming exclusively...mainly because of peer pressure...if I strayed from
the norm, there was not a lot of open mindedness at the time...to play "dance music"
which was not..."masculine" or too "_ _ _" (insert phrase now condemned)

PS--what is with the Japanese chatter over the concert video above? Who does that?

In Pittsburgh, in Lansing, in Detroit, in Toronto, in Rochester...so many killer bands were trying to be TOTO. How many grunge bands did PJ spawn? REM?

The difference was that to get to TOTO was very difficult!
