"I think my main gripe was how much product placement there is in Instagram posts...Modern Drummer when I read it for all those years. I mean, every thing about that magazine is designed to sell you shit, cover to cover."

Welcome to America...one long commercial and when there is actual conversation it is centered on Erisology (the study of disagreement, specifically the study of unsuccessful disagreement). Every talk radio host needs to be grateful because for every hour of actual "talk" they put in about 20 mins...the rest is commercials for shit I don't need...and if I hear one more "1 800 Kars for Kids or Geico" commercial, something is gonna break!

Yep. There's so much about chasing the almighty dollar that I can kvetch about, but it is the society that we live in. Anyone that says money can't buy happy-ness has never lived in their car or worried over the calendar slowly creeping towards a bill payment. So, it is what it is. But I think I'm just still of the mind that art gets made for art's sake. And when great art starts being recognized and starts steering towards commercialism is what is frustrating. I don't know how to feel one way or the other about it, because I'm actively participating in it.
Moderation's all well and good, just don't overdo it.

TL;DR- Choose your information diet based upon your desired output, goals, or “purpose”.

I’ve thought a lot about this subject over the past few years, and listened to a lot of discussion about the impact of social media on the overall creative output and intellectual capacity of society at large (Neil Postman’s book ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death’ was a helpful companion though not a direct correlation).

The only tangible conclusion I’ve found is that like anything else (and seemingly to a heightened degree in the Information Age), it all boils down to individual choices. In the era of information onslaught, we have to be increasingly careful about what information we choose to consume... and be aware of its effects on our internal voice and subconscious. What you put in affects what comes out.

George Soros wrote:Social media companies deceive their users by manipulating their attention and directing it towards their own commercial purposes.
They deliberately engineer addiction to the services they provide. This can be very harmful, particularly for adolescents.
There is a similarity between internet platforms and gambling companies.
Casinos have developed techniques to hook gamblers to the point where they gamble away all their money, even money they don’t have.

Something very harmful and maybe irreversible is happening to human attention in our digital age.
Not just distraction or addiction; social media companies are inducing people to give up their autonomy.
The power to shape people’s attention is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few companies.
It takes a real effort to assert and defend what John Stuart Mill called “the freedom of mind.”

There is a possibility that once lost, people who grow up in the digital age will have difficulty in regaining it.
This may have far-reaching political consequences. People without the freedom of mind can be easily manipulated.
This danger does not loom only in the future; it already played an important role in the 2016 US presidential elections.
