It's almost futile to say what constitutes a Top10 of Vinnie's most impressive recordings or boots.
I've been listening to Big Drum the past week. But this bootleg from Catalina Bar & Grill of the same
group from Nov 21, 1989 and I am convinced this might be Vinnie's most impressive outing.
Given that he was reading the music and he had to take control of the band, as the sax and trumpet
played out of sync purposely ( music called for this like Miles and Wayne--NEFFERTI ) Vinnie had to hold it
together and simultaneously infuse each tune with the most busy, sophisticated phrasings AND solos.
I have collected many bootleg performances of Vinnie throughout the years from his days playing outside gigs
while @ Berklee (1974-76) to his Culver City rehearsals with Zappa in Aug 1978 till 2023. And this bootleg from
1989, Buell Neidlinger Quintet impresses me most.
The music is not easily categorized as swing, straight 1/8 th note but was wonky, arranged by
the leader (Buell)
Vinnie's busy, dense, over-the-top playing ( what the leader wanted) NEVER GETS IN THE WAY !
