Fair enough- doesn't take anything away from his playing at all. Just a pet peeve of mine, really.Kurtis wrote:Dean Brown (guitar) has been jumping around like that for decades. It's how he feels the music. I dug him getting freaky.I had a tough time watching the video due to the guitar player jumping around like an idiot as if he was in an amphitheater or arena or something. You're at a jazz club. Sure, you're playing fusion-ish stuff, but come on brah, you don't need to draw that most attention to yourself. Those keyboard patches were fucking horrid, too.

2 OH and a Kick I have heard he likes. Dave's got such a great touch and feel, a every time he plays it's a master class on how to play drums. Stellar sounds as always.
Great audio on that one!
Agree about the key's.. it's 2012 gentleman, up your sample game a bit.

I love Dean Brown! First heard/saw him with Billy Cobham. He also played on the first few Vital Information records. I love how into it he gets. Believe me, he's not trying to draw attention to himself.

Willyz, with all due respect that seems a bit pretentious don't ya think? What are they supposed to stand around and not get into it? Im sure you would applaud a video where Elvin is so into it that he pops a cymbal off the stand. In a jazz club. Im sure you have gotten teary eyed over Tony blasting away at his drums. In a jazz club. This line of thinking may be why the jazz club is dying. Seeing the instrumentalists lay it all out in a physical way like that gets me excited that musicians still feel that way even about "jazz". Maybe that is just what is needed to get some jazz/fusion/etc back into big arenas and theaters like RTF and Mahavishnu. Im sick of the shoegazer jazz that has become the cliche. I wanna see sweat and tears when these guys are done.
That being said, I do understand if it is a pet peeve of yours, we all have them. Personally, I just think its a positive thing.

I don't think there's anything pretentious about that at all. Again, I did state that it doesn't take anything away from his playing, which is the most important part at all. It's just a bit distracting if I'm trying to watch the video as well as listen to the music. The Tony analogy is a bit of a stretch, because there isn't really anything distracting about Tony's thing visually, which is what we're discussing, right? At the end of the day if that's how you get into the music on stage, then great, providing it doesn't take away from the music. Just a pet peeve. Nothing more than that.circh bustom wrote:Willyz, with all due respect that seems a bit pretentious don't ya think? What are they supposed to stand around and not get into it? The jazz club is dying is another discussion altogether... and I think part of that is probably because of the cost of everything. After the cover charge, drink minimum, and what have you, it's an expensive night (especially some of the LA joints). Mix that with the fact that younger people aren't really exposed to jazz in a mainstream medium, and that they'd rather listen to Skrillex than appreciate something like be-bop, dig? The only people I know that are in to jazz/bop/fusion or whatever are musicians.

Yet here you are, complaining that a musician is "distracting", while you watch a video recording of a performance that you didn't have to pay to see.willyz wrote:The jazz club is dying is another discussion altogether... and I think part of that is probably because of the cost of everything. ...well, I don't live in New York. And if I lived in New York and had the dough to go see Weckl play then I would go to the gig, enjoy the music, and still feel the same way about this.
What's so wrong with being annoyed at the guy jumping around? I didn't say anything negative about his playing. Why is this a big deal to you guys? I can't comment on something that someone else thew online for the world to see?

We often forget how lucky we are to have such incredible access to live performances, soon after the performance if not simultaneously. If only we could force YouTube/Google to fairly share their revenue with the artists. Probably won't happen without government legislation and severe penalties.
