Need help figuring out a lick

Postby Jeremy Smirnoff » Wed Jun 13, 2012 8:46 pm

For the first time in many years I am scratching my head at a lick Mr. Peart played. (That concept is pretty cool in itself cause he is not a spring chicken and neither am I and I have been listening to his style for years and can usually figure out what's going on shortly after I hear it. How amazing of him to still surprise people after all the years!!)

Rush. Headlong Flight. About 4:38-4:50.

No idea what's going on there. I know it's something between the snare and toms, but not sure of the sticking to phrase it like that. Any ideas at all would be appreciated.

From repeated listening I am thinking it's just a single stroke alternating sticking that is being split between the snare and some toms, and maybe some bass drum accents towards the last couple of measures at the end of the fill where he changes the pulse. I am also thinking he uses both hands to go to the toms for accents... It's gonna bug me til I figure out what's going on here. Any help is appreciated. This song is a single freely streaming on the net if some of you don't have the record. Cheers.

Sounds like singles with accents, the mix and the flanger makes it trippy... and a little distracting so it sounds like it could be something different, but singles with accents sounds right. Both hands being used as well...
