Before you spend tons of money on a new kit, I'd look for a used kit. I'd also look for the best edge person in your area.

Once you get your drums, find someone with a granite table machined flat to within a few 10,000s of an inch. Do the edge trueness tests, before and after, on that. Your edge ...

If he doesn't have insurance he should just say so, or at least say why he needs the money (medical reasons, offset tour costs, temporary housing, etc.) $200,000 is a LOT of money.

I think it depends on the gig. A wedding band - you're probably expected to clone the parts. Bar band - maybe, maybe not. Tribute band - absolutely.

Dennis is not off in that Stern clip. He's doing something he's done for years, taking it out. It takes some strong aural chops not to get lost listening to him and holding one's place in the form. Not everyone can do that.
