Free Floating Snares

Postby deseipel » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:24 pm

Anyone have any experience with these? I would think the tone would be 'pure' since no hardware touches the shell. But, I'm guessing the benefit, if any, isn't enough for it to be a 'must have' for all snare drums. I'd also wonder if changing the head is a pain?

I know that those things are HEAVY (and bulky too). I remember Gregg and Dennis using them and sounding good though...

Those guys always sound good because they're good. Good drummers know how to tune and hit properly.

I've played the wood and brass and owned the aluminum one. They all sound good, like any other nice snare but I hated the hardware on them. Everything I've ever owned from Pearl has broken or felt like it would break. You change the head just like any other snare, no hassle at all. They sound good but so does any Ludwig or Yamaha metal snare.

Yes, I have the Brass 6.5 x 14 free floating snare and
the 5x14 Brass Free Floating and the 5x 14 black lacquered Maple Free Floating.

Heads are very easy to change.
If you want a wood shell, if you want a Brass shell, if you want a Steel shell,
as soon as you remove the head, you can instantly change the shell to any
of the above.

I have a 3.5" x 14" wood shell FF. It's a good snare. Jeff played a 3.5" brass on his video.

Do you guys feel like the concept delivers? That is, the tone of the drum is 'uninhibited' or pure? just curious.

No. It sounds like a good drum. It doesn't SOUND any different from anything else I've hit. The only unique thing about it is you can change from wood to metal in a few minutes.

Not much, but I've played a friend's Pearl Master maple a bit. Great drum worthy of consideration by anyone IMO. Sounds different enough from all my other snares to justify it.

I had a steel free floating.. It was cool.. I don't have it any more.. Liked my Black Beauty more.. I think that's what happened..
With a snare the idea of more tone from no hardware touching is kinda misleading, because you usually muffle it somewhat anyway.. It was a decent snare.. No better or worse than something else in its price range though.
